Brick

Year: 2005

Why'd I Watch It?: JGL, and because Elizabeth told me to.

What's It About?: A high school kid trying to solve the murder of his ex-girlfriend.

What'd I Think?: Using noir dialogue and older styles of framing shots here and there in an otherwise totally modern movie proved to be an effective concept. Overall it made an otherwise potentially conventional sort of plot pretty engaging. Also, the cast did a bang up job of delivering the dialogue in the fast paced, inflection sensitive way it needed to be in order to achieve the desired effect.

(500) Days of Summer

Year: 2009

Why'd I Watch It?: I heard good things, also JGL.

What's It About?: A boy and a girl's relationship from start to finish.

What'd I Think?: I identified with JGL's character a little too much, which worries me a little. Zooey Deschanel didn't annoy me like she normally does. I like a lot of the different more unconventional methods of storytelling that happen. The split screen between expectations and reality really depressed me a lot. Thanks movie.

The Big Lebowski

Year: 1998

Why'd I Watch It?: My mom wanted to watch a movie.

What's It About?: The Dude getting tied up in unsavory business.

What'd I Think?: The Coen brothers are mad geniuses. Delightful, bizarre, and some how, sort of believable. Jeff Bridges and John Goodman are brilliant.

Jabberwocky

Year: 1977

Why'd I Watch It?: My dad and I hoped it would be good.

What's It About?: A poor boy who goes to the big city in hopes of making enough money to win the hand of his love.

What'd I Think?: What the hell. It's too strange, which is something I'd never thought I'd say in a negative way about a Terry Gilliam movie. It's kind of like the whole thing got away from him. Pretty much none of the characters have anything redeeming about them, which may have been intentional, but it's just so...odd. Still, there are a lot of really neat things.

Blade Runner

Year: 1982

Why'd I Watch It?: It seemed necessary.

What's It About?: A man who exterminates androids for a living.

What'd I Think?: Sci-fi classic. The atmosphere is amazing. Harrison Ford is wonderful. Super interesting adaptation of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?.

Knight and Day

Year: 2010

Why'd I Watch It?: We missed the other movie we were going to see.

What's It About?: An agent with dubious intentions and the random woman who gets mixed up with him.

What'd I Think?: Tom Cruise was really charming in a crazy sort of way. He's still appealing, I just wish he wasn't so batshit. This was a really fun movie. Like super fun. It wasn't necessarily good, but really entertaining, like The A-Team. Also, Peter Sarsgaard is EVERYWHERE.

Mysterious Skin

Year: 2004

Why'd I Watch It?: Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

What's It About?: Damaged youth.

What'd I Think?: I was not warned. D: It was good, but I didn't like it? It's one of those movies that I feel isn't supposed to be liked, mostly because of the subject material. Still, it was super well acted by everyone, which is what makes it all work. JGL is super attractive.

Inception

Year: 2010

Why'd I Watch It?: I was excited.

What's It About?: Going into dreams and doing things.

What'd I Think?: I was so excited for this one and it did not disappoint. Thank you Christopher Nolan. ilu. The costuming alone was enough to make me elated. Most stylish movie I have seen since the last Nolan movie I watched. Also, a redonkulously attractive cast. Nolan really likes putting bags over Cillian Murphy's head. The story's not bad either, though I'd recommend seeing it at least twice.

Bad Boys

Year: 1995

Why'd I Watch It?: Paul and I brought it on laserdisc.

What's It About?: A movie about two black cops written entirely by three white guys.

What'd I Think?: Will Smith is excellent. Martin Lawrence didn't annoy me as much as I thought. Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer oozes from the pores of this film. Fun, but average 90s blow up shit movie.

Zombieland

Year: 2009

Why'd I Watch It?: Group decision.

What's It About?: A small group of surviors in the post-zombie apocalypse.

What'd I Think?: Fun. As a person who enjoys a good zombie movie, this was wonderful. It's also great to see with someone who has a fear of clowns. V. entertaining.

Zodiac

Year: 2007

Why'd I Watch It?: Mike and I had some time to kill, so we watched a RDJ movie.

What's It About?: The Zodiac killer case, stretching from the 60s to the 90s.

What'd I Think?: If you're one of those people who complain about movies being long, gtfo. If you're a rational human being who doesn't mind a bit of creepy and loves flailing Jake Gyllenhaal, drunksy RDJ, and Anthony Edwards, take a look at this.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Year: 2009

Why'd I Watch It?: Maybe it would be good, also it was the free Friday movie.

What's It About?: How Snikt Bub got to snikting bubs.

What'd I Think?: The opening credits were reeeeeally good. The first 20 minutes or so were also pretty good. After that it began to get stupid until I felt betrayed. I didn't appreciate the poor forcing in of lots of characters. I'd rather they had done a few characters well. Bleh.

Year: 2003

Why'd I Watch It?: I liked the first one.

What's It About?: Dinosaurs being back.

What'd I Think?: I've had a kind of falling out with kids movies. Anyway, I'm sure I would have enjoyed this one more had I been about eight years younger...not to mention paying better attention to the plot. It was okay.

The Wedding Date

Year: 2005

Why'd I Watch It?: Sarah and I just saw it because of Jack Davenport.

What's It About?: Awoman hiring an escort to be her date to her sister's wedding.

What'd I Think?: Yes I saw this. It was actually funny and entertaining. Romantic comedies, not starring Adam Sandler (unless he is accompanied by Billy Idol at some point during the film) or Jim Carrey, are my guilty pleasure. Maybe there just have to be British people in them. Oh dear lord. I think that's right.

Why'd I Watch It?: I like the comic a lot.

What's It About?: An alternate 1985 where costumed superheroes have been outlawed but now there's a dead old guy and a sinister plot that happened 35 minutes ago.

What'd I Think?: I enjoy it more every time I watch it. The opening credits are amazing beyond anything. Excellent soundtrack. My only real complaints lie in how overstated Zack Snyder made everything. Some things can be subtle, dude.

Why'd I Watch It?: It looked pretty.

What's It About?: A social climber in the late 19th century and her difficult ascension up the ladder.

Van Helsing

Year: 2004

Why'd I Watch It?: Vampires + Hugh Jackman + Daisy.

What's It About?: The legendary vampire hunter.

What'd I Think?: Yes, it was horrible, so naturally I enjoyed it. Ha. Kind of like Underworld, really. I like action movies, they entertain me, which is what movies are supposed to do. The plot was eeeh, as were those vampires. I really like Daisy (David Wenham). I like Hugh Jackman. Also, it was vaguely steampunky.

Valkyrie

Year: 2008

Why'd I Watch It?: Jonathan and I felt obligated.

What's It About?: The 1944 plot amongst Nazi and German officials to kill Hitler.

What'd I Think?: Despite screwing up history a bit (hey, you gotta romanticize things a little bit), it actually did a pretty good job of telling the basic story, how the plot was about nationalism and preserving Prussia. Managing to enjoy it despite having just written a paper on the topic really impressed me about the script writing. Acting is pretty excellent too. Nazis are great movie fodder.

Underworld

Year: 2003

Why'd I Watch It?: At the time we were all really into vampires and dressing like we were at a bondage club.

What's It About?: Vampires vs. Werewolves.

What'd I Think?: First of all, costumes and sets were all very nice. Violence was plentiful. Plot was...half-way clear. Character development was not that great. Only a few corny things. On par with Reloaded.

Twilight: New Moon

Year: 2009

Why'd I Watch It?: More rifftrax.

What's It About?: The same vampire and girl but with an added shirtless wolfboy and even more dependency issues.

What'd I Think?: Same as before. Riff is hilarious. Movie is poo, though it seems like some of the actors are starting to not give a shit, which makes the movie a little more bearable, but not enough.

Twilight

Year: 2008

Why'd I Watch It?: The rifftrax promised to be hilarious.

What's It About?: Some completely uninteresting girl who everyone likes for some reason and a sparkily vampire boy who loves the girl because he wants to eat her?

What'd I Think?: If you're not a 14-year-old-girl, watch this thing with rifftrax and you'll enjoy it as much as they do (just not for the same reasons). I've actually seen this three times because of how funny it is. As a movie goes it's pretty awful. Especially the "acting".

Troy

Year: 2004

Why'd I Watch It?: Group decision.

What's It About?: The battle at Troy, only not good and epic.

What'd I Think?: Oh Holy Lord. As a Hollywood blockbuster movie it was okay, though realizing Agamemnon was also William Stryker from X2 kinda threw me off for a lot of the movie. As an adaptation of the Illiad though....it blew hardcore. This movie hurt me. The best part of the movie: Eric Bana. If Sean Bean had more of a role (and he should have), his role would have equaled Eric Bana's greatness as Hector.

Titan A.E.

Year: 2000

Why'd I Watch It?: Sarah and I decided to.

What's It About?: The future and saving humanity from bad aliens.

What'd I Think?: It's a combination of cartoons and CG. Matt Damon's disembodied voice is kinda weird. Ended up calling the captain guy "Tyler Durden" as their fashion sense ran close together, so not much attention was given to learning names. That was the first animated thing I'd seen in a really long time. I'm not exactly sure how I feel about all the things taken from Star Wars, like pretty much all the sound effects. And there appears to be no underwear in the future. I shudder to think.

What'd I Think?: Diverges a fair amount from the book, but I like the movie a lot. Matt Damon and Jack Davenport together and yes, very much like that? One thumb up. Violence, more specifically, blunt force trauma to the head? Two thumbs up. AND it's set in Italy? mmmm.

What's It About?: A social reject trying to be the coolest kid in school.

What'd I Think?: Not quite like the show, but still hilarious. Not quite as politically incorrect as the show, and Jeri Blank's sexuality wasn't quite as ambiguous. Still, if you liked the show, this is a really excellent extension of it, though it kinda is one long episode with a load of amazing celebrity roles (esp.
